Miss Bates _does_ see the down-side of people and things (there are any number of examples in JA's masterful Miss B monologues), she just chooses not to dwell on them.

That's why she manages to be so genuinely happy and good natured, living as a shabby-genteel spinster with a deaf old mother on a small income.

I agree with Tim that she really is a Good Woman, with admirable qualities.

It's part of the genius of JA to pay attention to people like Miss Bates, and make her a key character, while still being able to make us laugh (or at least smile in recognition) at her foibles.
