carriages   Written by Tamtam (2/24/2011 10:40 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Advertised as 'Barouche-Landau', penned by Tarn
Are you new?

I have the book the History of the Carriage and looked up barouche and landau to help the discussion. But I find this book too confusing to really be able to confirm something enough to post! It covers all of Europe's carriages and since there is so much difference between countries it gets all muddled. I wish it were just English carriages!

It says the landau (named either after a place or a man named Landow) was a vehicle for park driving and it has a picture. It was the kind of carraige with fold down top and due to its use for pleasure driving in summer is also called a sociable.

It calls the barouche a promenade vehicle that showed the luxury of the owner since it signaled he had more than one carriage being the barouche wasn't practical all year. It says it was replaced by the landau so maybe the barouche-landau suggested modernizing. After that the book is too confusing I am afraid and I can't make out the difference of the landualette.
