I found this re: Jane Austen and slavery Written by Nina RG (2/24/2011 8:47 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Changes my opinion of Jane Austen as one not interested, penned by AnnetteJ

...which strongly indicates that JA had read about and was interested in the topic of slavery. Many names and incidents in Emma have references to the slave trade and it just seems too much of a coincidence to not be intentional on JA's part:)
