I agree with you Gianni, I think. I see a deep seated distrust of Jane for Emma that's combined with Jane's natural reserve. I don't want to start reserved/shy wars here but Jane fits my concept of 'reserved' (lacking openness) more than 'shy' (lacking confidence). For example, her enthusiasm for a ball is not consistent with diffidence for me.

Jane and Emma have come into contact regularly for 20 years. Jane understands Emma's personality. I can imagine that when she was younger, Emma was not quite as gracious as she seems to be today and let slip some of her thoughts. Jane gives Emma no information because she does not trust her and is determined to not give her the satisfaction. It actually shows remarkable strength of character for Miss Fairfax.
