The name means "farmer"   Written by Graciela (2/23/2011 1:03 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Donwell and Knightley, penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

From the Online Etymology Dictionary:

George: masc. personal name, from L.L. Georgius, from Gk. Georgos "husbandman, farmer," from ge "earth" + ergon "work"

The name introduced in England by the Crusaders ..., but not common until after the Hanoverian succession (18c.).

George Knightley = the knightly farmer?

I wonder if JA was aware of the etimology.
