I do not have a problem with using personal experience to help understand the text but it seems to me your questions were probably not of the same nature as that of our fair heroine. From your description it seems that you asked questions about the supervisor regarding his background and relationships in business unlike Emma’s questions which concerned personal relationships. Emma’s agenda in questioning Jane was to discover evidence for her suspicions that Jane and Mr. Dixon are in love—that he was ready to abandon Miss Campbell for Jane but did not because he needed Miss Campbell’s fortune. Unless you asked for the status of your new supervisor’s marital relationship and how folks valued his company in private relationships then I don’t see how you are guilty of the same impertinence I attribute to Emma. Another difference is that there is no suggestion Emma will ever be acquainted with Mr. Dixon—her questions are not in preparation for a future relationship as it appears was your situation.
If I have mischaracterized your experience I apologize. Thanks for reading! (:D)
