I cannot see Jane as victim. CH:1
We tend to ignore/overlook what Mr Woodhouse says, but I don't think he's that stupid. He knows it, and Mr Knightley subconciously knows it too, that's why he expects so much from her. He himself runs away....or rather, rides away from Miss Bates when her chatter becomes overpowering, but Emma should 'bear' it. He finds Jane's reserve something a man doesn't like in a wife, but whether that is something that can work in friendship he's not bothered to reflect on. No, Emma has to 'bear' that. Work towards breaking that barrier.
That Emma realises she should do more is because she's basically a good person, and forgets for a moment the part played by Jane in this. Coming to Jane. She had a chance at Hartfield to further her aquaintance with Emma, but she of course stonewalled her, so now she shouldn't become the victim. Now she has to sit and listen about people she doesn't know anyway...from Mrs Elton :-D
