is she sets off Emma's better qualities by comparison. While there are a lot of similarities in Mrs. Elton and Emma, they are quite different as well. For instance, Mrs. Elton is vain about her looks and her dressing (Ch. 35), while Mr. Knightley acknowledges that Emma does not have any personal vanity (Ch. 5), and is in fact, ready to admire beauty and elegance in others.
