Competition   Written by BarbaraB (2/20/2011 4:19 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Well, the reason she resembles Emma is...., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

]...she [Mrs. Elton] wants to be what Emma is...the first lady of Highbury.

I can not argue with that.

]The difference is that in Emma's case *she is* (rather than wants) while it is Mrs Elton who 'wants'.

While, true, Emma is first in reality, Mrs. Elton has physically usurped it and Emma wants it back physically as well as in reality. She is vexed that she must yield to Mrs. Elton for the time being and Mrs. Elton will most likely be constantly in competition, trying to keep it as long as she can manage it and trying to snatch it back whenever she can if she ever relinquishes it (which I assume she must do eventually though one hates to put anything past her).

I think the main reason they resemble each other is that they both want to be the one in control of everything. Even if there were no Emma to copy, I feel that Mrs. Elton would whirl into Highbury like the hurricane she is, trying to be first and foremost and being just as highhanded, intrusive and the director of the lives of others. She doesn't need an Emma to be the way she is but since there is an Emma, it is irony at its best, imho. :)
