Mrs. Elton is not a really likable person but as a character there is flair about her that can make her entertaining at times. Her outrageous vulgarity is something to behold. But I couldn't help but read her intrusive personality with a bit of a smirk as I watched Emma getting a taste of her own medicine. Mrs. Elton is an exaggerated Emma! Let's see:
* They each want to be first and foremost. Mrs. Elton gets temporary privilege of the entitlement as a bride but technically Emma is holder of the position if she can manage to wrestle it away from Mrs. Elton who appears to want permanent ownership of it. LOL.
* They each indulge in a great deal of self-deception
* They each love to run interference in others' lives and each has taken it upon herself to supervise the life of protegee.
* I believe (I think I have this right) they each would like to own the ability to play well but is doing nothing about it.
It is interesting to see how Emma really can redirect a conversation when it is in her own interests: "And then, to prevent further outrage and indignation, changed the subject directly: 'I do not ask whether you are musical, Mrs. Elton.'" Now this is what I was looking for when she was unhappy with the way the conversation was going with Jane. Here, she is being a gracious host and under more adverse conditions and which are not even of her own making. Jane is probably looking pretty good about now.
