Nothing really to do with the Coxes IMO.

After all she did consider William Cox as suitable - classwise - for Harriet.

The word 'Martin' is like a switch which when pressed, out comes words like vulgar (I take it to mean common here), not genteel, clown, etc etc for him and anyone involved with him or by association....and Harriet stands and listens and gets assured he was really not the right man to 'climb up' in society, though Emma imagines she already belongs up there.
