Before Jane was 9.   Written by Reeba (2/19/2011 3:26 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Distrust makes more sense, penned by Frances G
Are you new?

CH:20

"Jane became their guest, paying them long visits and growing a favourite with all; and, before she was nine years old, his daughter's great fondness for her, and his own wish of being a real friend, united to produce an offer from Colonel Campbell of undertaking the whole charge of her education. It was accepted; and from that period Jane had belonged to Colonel Campbell's family, and had lived with them entirely, only visiting her grandmother from time to time. "

I undersatnd that before the Campbells took on total responsibility of Jane she paid them **long visits.** I would thing from the age of 5 or so.
She lost her parents at 3, and after some years Campbells came into their lives.

Jane herself doesn't fit into the crowd at Highbury, and it is really unfair of Mr Knightley to accept Emma to go out of her way during these infrequent visits by someone who is there only for a short time.
