in consequence of the missive, Mr. Knightley and Emma, penned by BarbaraB
"It is quite probable that Mr. Woodhouse will pass on at some point ... What will her life be like when she is either rattling around at Hartfield by herself or against her own pronouncements she marries a gentleman of her own class ..."
It is also very possible that Hartfield will be taken over by Isabella and John -- Isabella would at least share in the inheritance or might inherit Hartfield as the eldest daughter. In such a case, I wonder how Emma and John Knightley would get along together! Isabella might be willing to let Emma continue to be in charge as though she is mistress of Hartfield, but I doubt that John would be willing to let Emma usurp his wife's position. Or if Emma is allowed to -- what a situation might develop -- almost like the Sir Thomas, Lady Bertram and Mrs Norris situation at Mansfield -- with Emma meddling in the lives of her nephews and nieces and wishing to arrange matches for them!
