Mr. Woodhouse might have started bemoaning Mr. Elton marrying a stranger again, had not other names followed on the list. I note he tends to only answer the last part of what is said to him, or rather the last part he catches. I think he has trouble sorting out his thoughts and so only mentions what is uppermost on his mind. So, if Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Perry were both local ladies before their marriages, he would have forgotten his cue for a repeated lament by the time Miss Bates ends her list, and simply agreed that Highbury is an excellent place for good society.
