Mr. Knightly Assumes Written by Jane Marie (2/17/2011 6:23 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, the [dis]agreeableness of yesterday's engagement, penned by Stephanie

Mr. Knightly does not know what Jane thinks, any more than Emma. Emma assumed the very worst. Mr. Knightly assumes better that Jane resists answering questions because she is shy or tactful (not gossipy).

In my non-expert opinion, Mr. Knightly is only asking Emma to assume the best of Jane's lack of candor.
