It was very wrong that it *would* escape, but IMO this act was not done deliberately as her guilt shows.
If she had planned to tell, the thought of 'duty by woman to woman' would not have escaped her then.

She seems to act before thinking quite often.

I don't think her story was 'nasty' in the sense it wasn't done out of hatred for Jane.
This is just one of her 'matching people' fantasies, the hero who saves the heroine, which when kept to herself would be fine, but letting it out is not done.
