How is Mr. Woodhouse? I am so glad to hear such a good account   Written by Stephanie (2/17/2011 11:19 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Repetition, penned by Erica M.
Are you new?

It is true that the repetition might be necessary to get through to Miss Bates. I noticed that often, during one of her effusions, there will be a question buried in it, that she seems to assume an answer to, without waiting for a response.

Like in ch. 21, for instance, she begins:

"Oh! my dear sir, how are you this morning? My dear Miss Woodhouse -- I come quite overpowered. Such a beautiful hind-quarter of pork! You are too bountiful! Have you heard the news? Mr. Elton is going to be married."

In that short visit, I think I count nine examples of Miss Bates's questions that do not wait for answers, including several that are asked more than once, which you think would imply she wanted to actually know! *chuckles*
