Jane hasn't spoken much. We have been discussing the question/answer episode between Emma and Jane which again is not clear and one has to rely on other incidences to show Emma's questioning, and 'one' answer of Jane's to Emma directly where she doesn't come off very well IMO - at least not dignified nor graceful as I see it, in CH:21 "When I have seen Mr. Elton," replied Jane, "I dare say I shall be interested -- but I believe it requires that with me. It seems more of a self indulgent response, and a retort more than an answer IMO. Jane is usually thought of with sympathy and as being good being an orphan and having to earn a living, but what she actually thinks about the people of Highbury and Emma in particular is left to our imaginations. Like Miss Bates I too believe in counting ones blessing.
Personally I don't feel bad for Jane or pity her. That's just life.
