Week 4: Clerihews!   Written by Laraine (2/17/2011 10:35 a.m.)
Are you new?

We've not tried this form before, so I hope that people have fun with it :)

Please send your poems to me (pemberley.laraine@gmail.com) by Sunday morning (that's a day later because I am late in posting this message.) We'll vote on Sunday and Monday, and announce on Tuesday.

Because clerihews are "biographical" in nature, I thought it would be fun to open up the subject for the week to any character at all who has already been mentioned in the book. I do have plans to do other major characters over the next four weeks, but there are many important-but-less-major-characters whom it might be fun to take on including Robert Martin and Mr. Woodhouse. You could also do anyone we have already done, or the major characters that you can probably figure out are yet to come.

If you are not familiar with clerihews, here is a short overview:

  • They are four lines, with the first two and the last two lines rhyming (AABB). Often the last two lines are longer than the first two. They don't have a prescribed meter or rhythm.
  • They are about a person, and the first line is usually just the person's name. You can add a little, but try to avoid adding much. Occasionally, I've seen the second line provide the person's name.
  • They are meant to be fun and funny, so have a good time!!

    Here's an example:

    Miss Emma Woodhouse
    Would often espouse
That one gentleman or other was superior
But her motives were sometimes ulterior.
