At this function, the Coles were entertaining both the "first and second set" of Highbury.

Harriet may have been expressing the general opinion of those around her - likely her school chums or others near her age.

Directly after Jane's playing, Mrs. Weston was asked to play country dances, to the enjoyment of many.

Jane would provide conversation not usually found around Highbury and could be a reason for each of the Knightly brothers sought out her conversation.

Likely, Miss Taylor would have exposed Emma to opera. Even if Emma had not taken the trouble to master the music herself, she may well have learned to appreciate both the music and Jane's skillfull mastery of it.
