taste was a bit too highbrow for Highbury? Except for Emma and Mrs. Weston, none of the other guests at the party could play the piano, and by inference, did not hear music often. The Coles children were just starting to learn. Most of the people who listened casually would enjoy something light and familiar, rather than complex sonatas in a language they did not understand. Jane Fairfax, both in her musical choices and in refusing to gossip, did not cater to the crowd. She liked to do her own independent thing, to misquote from another novel. ;-)
