This might be correct usage of 'taste,' but it cannot be the only correct usage, unless we assume Harriet to be misusing the word in ch. 27, I think. She says of Jane Fairfax's playing:

"Are you sure [Jane Fairfax has both taste and execution]? I saw she had execution, but I did not know she had any taste. Nobody talked about it."

Unless Harriet meant that no one seemed to like Jane Fairfax's selections of music...?
