A trend - escalating unkindness?   Written by Robbin (2/16/2011 1:15 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Excellent points, penned by Kathleen Glancy
Are you new?

Thanks! I would like to think Emma would have qualified her abuse of Miss Bates if Mr. Woodhouse had not interrupted. I guess we can’t know for sure but as Emma did not qualify what she said it does seem to fit into a trend. It seems Emma has been less kind about Miss Bates as time goes on. She disparaged Miss Bates manner in Ch. 10 but as you said she did admit the poor lady is not a “typically” illiberal and cross old maid. Emma makes sport of Miss Bates to Frank in Ch. 23 and then mocks her to Mrs. Weston in Ch. 26. I agree that Emma will probably continue to be unkind about Miss Bates but if the trend holds true she will be unkinder as well. Oh Dear! (:D)
