Are you new?

When Frank Churchill is enthusing about the possibilities of a ball at the Crown, the ON tells us about the "gentlemen and half-gentlemen" who play whist at the inn.

Is this just JA indulging in a bit of jocularity? Or does anyone know whether "half-gentleman" actually means something more specific? My otherwise excellent Norton Critical Edition of the novel offers no enlightenment...
