in consequence of the missive, Emma's Dislike of the Bates Family [Long], penned by BarbaraB
Thank you for your detailed comments. I have a great admiration for Jane Fairfax, someone who has applied herself and accomplished so much. I've always felt that Miss Bates is extremely proud of Jane, which is why she reads/shares her letters with friends and neighbors. Miss Bates has so little in a material sense, yet manages to be positive and happy with her life. I find it hard to fathom that Emma cannot find it in her heart to be kinder, and more understanding, towards her.
Perhaps you are right, and Jane Fairfax has sensed Emma's true feelings towards Miss Bates...that would explain why she has held back and mainted her reserve.
