Without scruple -- without apology   Written by Stephanie (2/15/2011 5:37 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, returning a call, penned by Nikki N
Are you new?

That comparison with Mr. Darcy interfering with Miss Bingley's acquaintance with Miss Bennet has never struck me before (if Darcy acted as you sketched it, it is even more so than written -- the Hunsford letter in ch. 35 merely says Miss Bingley told him of Jane Bennet's presence in London, not that he suggested the cut).

If Mr. Darcy's redemption in P&P is obtained by his apologizing and admitting complete wrong in the matter, then, similarly Emma may mature to the point that she, too, can offer Harriet sincere apologies and become the young lady we want her to be.
