The narrator did warn us about it, back in chapter 1, and the credible Mr Knightley refined it with "... I do not think her personally vain. ...; her vanity lies another way. ..." in chapter 5.

These displays of flippancy about Miss Bates sound like a sort of intellectual narcissism on Emma's part: I think of her as preening herself over her own insightfulness and way with words. If only her vanity extended to cover her discretion, it'd be in such good order that she'd seem to be quite free from it.
