The Martin's stock seems to rise with every mention of their names. They are upset and unhappy but do not give in to any anger or incivility. They show lots of "class" even though Emma does not respect their class. At the risk of crossing over into Astenuations, Miss Austen portrays with fondness and great respect people from the "vulgar" classes as deserving, honorable, and respectful. (I.E. The Gardiners, the Crofts, The Martins, the Coles) |
