in consequence of the missive, I am not inclined to be so severe on Harriet (long), penned by Anne-Marie
too have sympathy for Harriet. I was actually trying to defend her from those who insist that the fact she wanted to go to Mrs Goddard's when she was ill is proof that she can stand up to Emma. Emma seems, not to carry this too far, almost like a schoolyard bully in her treatment of Harriet -- she is not a mean bully in the sense of a physical threat, but she certainly must know that Harriet bows to her higher social standing, and uses this to bend Harriet to her will.
