... even in our modern world people are frequently unable to decide whether ingratitude toward one person's kindly actions is preferable to ingratitude toward another person's magnificent condescension. Think of the attitudes Harriet would have had to deal with in her world!

I don't advance this as a necessary defense of Harriet; rather as something to consider in any such case, and particularly in the case of a "tiny mind". Rather than scorn, I would feel a distressed sympathy.
