Thank you, Graciela - and Reeba   Written by Kathleen Glancy (2/14/2011 6:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Harriet didn`t spend time with Miss Martin, penned by Graciela
Are you new?

I had overlooked this passage, which makes it clear that Harriet certainly consulted someone about the call, and as nobody else she knows disapproves of the Martins to the extent that Harriet didn't dare to confess what she really wanted to do, that someone must have been Emma.

I suppose Miss Martin might have written the note in advance, but it would be rather a waste of paper if Harriet had been in. She is well known at the school, as a former pupil, and could have asked for paper and ink and prepared the note there.

Reeba, you are right - the 15 minutes must have been mentioned. But did Emma necessarily say all the other stuff about it signalling a move to a purely formal relationship out loud? And if she didn't would Harriet understand that it would?
