Highbury Gossip about Emma and Elton Written by Bridget T (2/14/2011 5:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Miss Bates drops a bombshell (chapt. 21), penned by Delories

I have read Emma several times, and this is the first time that I noticed that gossip was around town about Elton's aspirations.

I am certain that John Knightley was not spreading rumors, so either Elton talked (unlikely, but possible given what George Knightley said about how Elton talks in the company of men), or Elton was more obvious than I thought.
