It may have been, but equally it may not. And I don't think we should rule out the possibility that Jane actually did enjoy Emma's performance despite any imperfections. After all, Mary Bennet has better technique than her sister Elizabeth, yet "Elizabeth, easy and unaffected, had been listened to with much more pleasure, though not playing half so well" as

Mary. Emma's abilities are probably on a par with Elizabeth's.
