Mr Elton "unequivocally put in his place as her inferior&quo   Written by Delories (2/14/2011 4:12 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Their peace is cut up for some time (long), penned by Robbin
Are you new?

This is an important point. Since his arrival, Mr E has been the darling of Highbury. He has a steady income and good social position as a clergyman of the Church of England (and therefore worthy to be considered a gentleman), and, just as important, he is young and uncommonly handsome. So used to being the pet of every gathering is Mr E that apparently it never occurred to him that Emma could turn him down.

Note the timing of his visit to Bath, a well-known spouse-hunting spot! It seems quite obvious what Mr E is up to. He knows that any number of eligible ladies would be happy to snap him up, and it may as well be sooner than later, not only to "show Emma" that he's not so inferior, but also to salve his wounded ego.
