Well, Jane would not have been privy to the wild imaginings running through Emma's mind at the time of this conversation. I don't think it would be rude at the time to have a general discussion on the felicity of the marriage. On the surface, it should have been just a polite inquiry.

Lol--Of course JA gives no description of Emma's body language while she was asking the questions...maybe that part is left to the imagination of the reader. Perhaps she couldn't control her "eagerness" or "curiosity" in her physical expressions.

Perhaps we shall learn later a possible explanation for Jane's guarded manner....
