Abominable Pride   Written by Tarn (2/13/2011 1:21 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Emma was not impertinent, penned by Patricia AA
Are you new?

While it is true that no one would accuse Mr. Darcy of having overstepped the boundaries of polite conversation, his manners were always giving offence - and this is a good example.

Darcy is used to receiving civil answers to his inappropriate remarks, just as modern recipients of the Duke of Edinburgh's most quoted remarks respond with something like "Ha-ha sir, most honoured." or just grimace in shock.

You make me wonder if Jane Fairfax saw Emma's questions as a dominance display, as if Emma were a prospective patron, interviewing a potential object of charity. I had thought of this more like a Catherine-Moreland-meets-Miss-Tilney situation, Jane gaining some knowledge of Emma's interests, and Emma having not the smallest consciousness of having explained them.
(But do not imagine that I expect an account of Miss Fairfax's sensations from you...)
