sorry but I dont think that Emma's sense of class consciousness is exaggerated. I dont think that Austen meant her remark about Emma being a character that most will dislike is meant to be taken TOO seriously.. she's not really likely to write a heroine who si going to be seriously disliked. I dont think that seh means Emma's atittude to class is meant to be her big fault. rather it is her desire to interfere in people's lives and manipulate them, and her fanciful beleif that because she likes Harriet the girl is suitable to be raised into the gentry class,
