I agree with your observations on Jane Fairfax's   Written by Patricia AA (2/11/2011 5:47 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I like it that Jane stonewalled Emma -- it gives Jane, penned by AnnetteJ

character being more complex than meets the eye. Someone who plays and sings with apparent skill/artistry must have a well of passion to tap into, otherwise the performance would be perfect but wooden.

I'm not so sure that her rebuff showed "spunk"...I actually thought it was more like giving someone the cold shoulder. I don't believe Emma was deserving of it.
