considered beautiful and/or very attractive, both have accomplishments (Jane's being the greater apparently, as Emma has no staying power on any of her hobbies, with the exception of her painting), and Jane has travelled widely, while Emma is pretty provincial, clinging to her "superior" social status even though she has never (or hardly ever) ventured beyond the borders of her county where she might meet other women of even greater wealth and standing. If Jane was envious,it could only be of Emma's wealth, which would certainly be understandable, but I don't see it. As I indicated below, I like the fact that Jane stonewalled Emma, as it was what Emma deserved.
