although as with all novels of this time period we need to view the class snobbery though an appropriate aperture. Since social classes were much more rigid and stratified, what seems horrifying to us was much more common and acceptable then.

Recall too that being illegitimate pretty much ruins Harriet's chances of settling with anyone of elevated rank- and all this not for a crime she committed but a crime of her father's...so this was certainly not an egalitarian society...
