does Emma lead a completely idle life?   Written by Ra (2/11/2011 6:16 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Jane Fairfax is a dull, boring..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

She does have to run the house in her mother's (and father's!) absence. To our 21st century minds that's not a lot, and she does have a lot of servants, but still, she does employ them and she is quite young to be doing that, imo. If anything, they have both had a bit of grit to make the pearl - Emma's situation is really confined, while Jane has always had to excel and be aware she will have to live off her talents and wits.

And yes, I do think Jane is more of the trad heroine of this period, silent, resigned, tragic whereas Emma is perhaps of a slightly earlier tradition, like the Vicar of Wakefield etc, where women aren't always much better than they 'ought' to be - which I certainly prefer!
