PS: Her lacklustre response....   Written by Reeba (2/11/2011 6:15 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Jane Fairfax is a dull, boring..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

to Emma's questions about Frank Churchill shows her as a woman limited to 'Bad/good weather today.' kind of conversations.

Since she's an outsider she doesn't gossip (we know), like all Highburians, including...Mr Knightley.
The answers inspite of being non commital can be coloured with more friendliness IMO.

In contrast we see an Emma who is not hesitant in showing what she's interested in, and goes about with enthusiasm. After all he's her beloved Mrs Weston's son and they all await his visit with great anticipation I'm sure......
....and she too is meeting Jane after a gap of 2 years!!!!

So my conclusion regarding this cold response is that she's either envious of Emma which could be a result of self pity.
She can't be feeling awkward at Hartfield, because she's used to this life at the Campbell's and has actually more experience of the world.
