discreet and reserved   Written by Nikki N (2/11/2011 1:25 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, It appears, penned by Ramya
Are you new?

I don't think Jane was rebuffing Emma's overture of friendship -- she was just rather discreet and reserved, but Emma seemed to expect Jane to be at once willing to gossip about her friends and acquaintances at Weymouth (especially Frank Churchill). Jane did talk in response to Emma's queries, but worded her responses as general views rather than her personal opinions. After all, Jane and Emma had not met and chatted with each other for some time, Jane might need a little time of getting re-acquainted before she could talk more freely with Emma. But Emma seemed to be annoyed with her -- "could not forgive her" -- after the first evening Jane spent at Hartfield with her grandmother and aunt. This appears to be only their second meeting since Jane's visit to Highbury -- the first meeting was when Emma called on her and wished there was a young man she could match-make her with!
