Teach at a school? JA's other Emma could think of nothing worse.   Written by Tom P2 (2/10/2011 6:25 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Fresh off her education, penned by Ramya
Are you new?

I'll try not to waffle on for too long over this, as it's from a different JA work, but I do think it may apply to Jane Fairfax's options too.

In The Watsons (e-text linked below), the family's in imminent danger of running out of money and sinking out of genteel society, and Emma Watson says: "I would rather be teacher at a school (and I can think of nothing worse) than marry a man I did not like."

Jane Fairfax, like Emma Watson, comes from a background of being raised and educated by a richer family than her own, but not being able to depend on that patronage indefinitely.
