Emma is somewhat jealous of the attention and praise bestowed on JF--because she is used to being the center of the Highbury "universe". But I also believe that JF bears resentment and jealousy towards Emma, probably because of her wealth and position.

I've always felt that these two SHOULD have been friends, given their ages, education, and social positions. I believe that Emma does make a sincere effort to be nice at the beginning of JF's first visit in two years, but that JF rebuffs the "olive branch"...it may have to do with a certain level of pride. Afterall, JF may have felt it was an act of charity (much like the offer of a hind quarter of pork).
