Emma's offer of "friendship." Also Jane is much more reserved than Emma, and shy people can sometimes be overwhelmed by attention, especially if it comes from an unexpected quarter, in this case the universal pet of Highbury. And she may be feeling the sting of sudden absence from her close friend of many years. I certainly can't lay most of the blame on Jane.
