Jane's mother was the daughter of a clergyman of the same parish as Mr. Elton and wife of a respectable military officer.

Jane would not have suited the mercenary Mr. Elton, but Emma did not know that before Harriet.

The Cox sons were on the rise socially. A Cox marriage to Jane would have strengthen social bonds among Highbury gentility and the Cox family. Jane could have lived comfortably without much quitting her genteel style in Highbury.
