I think it could be argued either way if Emma did or did not understand the riddle, but we can be pretty sure JA did. It seems to me this is more of a joke between JA and the reader.


Sort of like kids today who can text message while talking to someone else on the phone, maybe JA is telling a tale and talking to us about something else at the same time.
