I don't really remember what I thought of the clergyman. Once again, Emma, left to her own devices, seems to be a poor judge of character -- she sees what she wants to see and it is what is all on the surface. At least she had some glimmering of the truth, albeit a truth supplied by another, before the big surprise! Her annoyance that he kept dogging her footsteps at the party was very amusing, as was the reaction of the two of them in the carriage. I find Emma more at fault, as Elton seemed genuine in his protestations of being blindsided by Emma's belief that he was smitten with Harriet. He wasn't very gallant though about Harriet, and certainly isn't someone I would wish on any of the women we have met so far.
