It didn't remind her of his wife.   Written by Graciela (2/8/2011 7:07 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, My thanks as well! Talk about something obscure, penned by AnnetteJ
Are you new?

Emma explains him the "courtship" charade and he says:

"Ah! it is no difficulty to see who you take after! Your dear mother was so clever at all those things! If I had but her memory!"

Mr. Woodhouse is remembering his wife cleverness for riddles in general ("all those things"). The "Kitty" charade has not be referred yet in this conversation (although he says he mentioned it at another occasion). Then he quotes part of it, and he says:

The name makes me think of poor Isabella; for she was very near being christened Catherine [Kitty is a nickname for Catherine - G] after her grandmama. I hope we shall have her here next week."

So it reminded him of his eldest daugther, because she could have been called "Kitty".
